Depending on the number of entrants, availability of the Cowen Suite and mats, Mike Terriere, Howard Marsh, Ivor Folkard and Butch Manning (the Organisers) will arrange for Purley Sports Club members, the various short mat competitions detailed below. Matches will be played every week, except during the school half term and Christmas holidays, from early October 2018 to late April 2019. Daytime match days are Monday, Tuesday and Friday, starting at 10.30, 12.00, 1.45, 3.30 or 4.00.
Short mat is also played on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, starting in early November. Details will be posted in October, but in the meantime for further information please contact Butch Manning on 020 8660 2649.
Short mat competitions are played for fun, but there is a level of commitment required. The Organisers would like everyone to enter as many competitions as possible, but a word of caution, the more you enter the more chance there is you may be asked sometimes to play twice in a day and/or on two or perhaps three days a week.
Please don’t enter the singles or pairs competitions if you are not available on finals day, April 2019.
To enter, print your name on the Entry Form posted in the bowls club house, tick the competitions you wish to enter and very importantly, add under comments: 1. dates you are unavailable for a period of two weeks or more during the season; 2. match days you are regularly unavailable i.e. on a Monday, Tuesday or Friday; 3. mornings and/or afternoons on match days you are regularly unavailable; 4. if you are willing to play on a Sunday if another competition or ad hoc sessions are arranged.
The entry fee, £30 for daytime or evening, must be paid to the Office before the season starts and cheques should be made payable to Purley Sports Club. Part of the entry fee is used to provide prizes at the end of the season for the winning finalists and runners up.
Singles The Organisers will make the draw for this competition and allocate match dates for the first round, starting January 2019. For subsequent rounds, players should arrange their own matches by the play date, which the Organisers will set. A schedule showing when there are free mats will be posted on the notice board.
Select Pairs The Organisers will make the draw for this competition and allocate match dates, which will usually be on a Tuesday, starting October 2018. The competition is played as a league. The team finishing first in the league are the winners. Both players should print their partners name under Comments on the Entry Form.
Triples The Organisers will make the draw for this competition, appoint captains and allocate match dates on a Monday or Friday, starting October 2018. The Organisers will select teams using outdoor handicaps, where available, to ensure the teams are equally matched. If there are sufficient entries two leagues of equal standing will be arranged. With two leagues, the winners and runners up in both will contest the semi final for a place in the final, with only one league the top four in that will contest the semi finals for a place in the final.
2-4-2 The Organisers will make the draw for this competition, appoint captains and allocate match dates on a Monday or Friday, starting October 2018. The Organisers will select teams using outdoor handicaps, where available, to ensure the teams are equally matched. The top four teams will contest the semi finals for a place in the final.
