Purley Sports Club hosts a Short Mat Club organised by Bowls Club members.
The club is open to all Purley Sports Club members and is run indoors at Purley Sports Club, in the Cowen Dining Room (terrace room), from Autumn through to Spring while the outdoor bowls green is closed. We have two mats which are rolled out side by side, the length of the room. We play with normal outdoor bowls. They run quite quickly on the mat so it's a physically gentler game.
Short mat is a great way of keeping in touch with your bowls friends during the winter. It's a very sociable game played for fun.
We play:
• Triples league
• 2-4-2 league
• Pairs
• Singles
The club sessions are held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from October to March. For further information please follow the links on the site menu.

On 29th March the club had its first ever (to my knowledge) friendly short mat bowls match against another club.
Nine of us visited Horsham Bowls club to play three rinks, with Horsham lending us three players. Their clubhouse is only six years old and so spacious they could leave the mats out all Winter. Oh what mats, they made ours look very sad, old and flattened but we fairly quickly adjusted our play.
We equited ourselves very well indeed as we were up against some County players and although we lost on all three rinks the closeness of the scores made us a little proud.
The scores were as follows:
rink 1 21-15
rink 2 22-16
rink 3 24-16
Horsham were excellent hosts, providing us with a light afternoon tea and we hope to play them again in the future.
